On Friday, January 27, 2017, the Portland Chapter of the NLG sent a letter to Mayor Wheeler and City Commissioners detailing issues and concerns around the PPB’s use of chemical weapons and impact munitions against a demonstrators on inauguration day, January 20, 2017. The letter included a 2007 report on Portland’s crowd control policies and practices written by NLG member Shauna Curphey. The NLG presented this report and recommendations to the City for the second time in 2011 in response to the PPB’s treatment of demonstrators during the Occupy Wall Street campaign.
The right to dissent, the right to gather, the right to protest and to resist unjust and unconstitutional policies coming out of the Trump administration must be zealously protected. The Portland NLG and Lewis and Clark chapters have been providing on-going legal support to demonstrations, and will continue to do so.
