Occupy Portland is a nonviolent movement to hold the United States government accountable.

It will begin on Oct. 6th at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. For more information, go to occupyportland.org.

To adequately support Occupy Portland, there will be two LO trainings in the next two days:

The first will be October 6th, directly before the Occupy Portland rally, at 11am at the north-end of Waterfront Park. This training will not train people to be NLG LOs, and will be geared towards LOs tied more intimately to Occupy Portland.

The second will be Friday at 5pm at the Portland Law Collective (1130 SW Morrison, Ste. 407). This training will “certify” people as NLG LOs.

Occupy Portland may go on indefinitely. Ideally, at least two NLG LOs will be present at all times for the duration of the occupation. Occupy Portland has its own group of legal observers, but it is imperative that NLG LOs also maintain a presence. Our recognizable green hats and the reputation of the NLG will likely deter police from infringing on protesters’ rights.Contact Jamie if you are interested in becoming a legal observer and providing support for Occupy Portland, call 503-092-5340.

The Portland NLG is also hosting Know Your Rights Trainings and providing criminal defense for people arrested for Occupy Portland activity.

Rally for a Better Way for Oregon

As Oregon grapples with a $3.4 billion revenue shortfall that threatens schools, health and human services and public safety — the public structures that nurture a strong middle class and protect the vulnerable among us — politicians appear bent on a cuts-only approach. Inexplicably, few lawmakers talk about the need to raise revenue to address our revenue shortfall, and some even wish to grant yet more tax loopholes and subsidies to corporations and the rich.

That’s why OCPP supports the Rally for a Better Way for Oregon. Organized by SEIU 503 and backed by dozens of labor and community groups, the rally will bring together Oregonians from across the state to the steps of the State Capitol building. We will be standing up for fairness, asking our elected leaders to take a balanced approach to balancing the budget.

Details:

What: Rally for A Better Way for Oregon
Date: Friday, May 20, 11:30 a.m.
Place: Front steps of the State Capitol, Salem

The Portland Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild,
and the Honorable Diana Stuart, Edward Jones,
Richard Baldwin and Robert Wollheim,
invite you to a…

REPORT BACK FROM TUNISIA
Friday, May 13, 2011
12:00 – 1:15 PM
Multnomah County
Courthouse
1021 SW 4th Ave.,
Room 226
Judge Wyatt’s Courtroom

This event is a brown bag lunch. Please bring your associates and friends.

Steven Goldberg and Tom Nelson were part of a delegation of lawyers and activists from the United States, England and Turkey which visited Tunisia in March at the invitation of the National Bar Association of Tunisia. The cataclysmic political changes which resulted in the fall of the Ben Ali regime in January sparked continued changes and protests throughout North Africa and the Middle East.

· How did such dramatic political change happen so quickly?
· What was the role of lawyers in bringing about this change?
· What are the challenges to the transition to democracy?
· How can U.S. lawyers and judges be part of such international delegations?

Come and find out the answers to these questions!

Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011
6 pm – Late
At Holocene
(1001 SE Morrison St., PORTLAND)

Meet Barbara Dudley.

She is the co-chair of the Oregon Working Families Party, and five years ago she (and a bunch of other folks) had an idea…what if we started an independent, grassroots political party focussed on bread and butter economic issues, as well as holding the other parties accountable to the concerns of working people? Not a bad idea, right?

Five years ago…

Five years ago, for her birthday, Barbara held a kick-off fundraiser for the Working Families Party and the Party was born. In that time we have successfully reformed Oregon’s election system by helping to pass “fusion voting” in the 2009 legislature. Now, in 2011, the legislature is seriously considering a WFP proposal to create the Oregon State Bank.

And to hear State Treasurer Ted Wheeler tell it in a recent radio inteview, it is thanks to the hard work of the Working Families Party that the Oregon State Bank is now moving forward.

We are turning five. Join us to celebrate!

Now Barbara is holding another birthday party…for herself, and for the WFP. You are invited to join us.

We will be fundraising for the Party, of course, but we will also be having a great time. Barbara has paid a DJ, ordered food, and invited everyone to come. If you have never met Barbara, don’t worry…this will be your chance. If you support the Working Families Party and you want to help us set the course for the next five years you are invited to join us:
Can’t come? Still want to help?

We know that many of you can’t make it to Portland. However, the WFP thrives on the grassroots financial support from people like you all over the state, so if you still want to help us out (and send Barbara a little love) there are two way you can make a financial contribution:

Sign up to become a monthly sustainer. A small, monthly contribution to the WFP can go a long way, and we won’t waste a penny! (Don’t forget to mark that you are making a recurring donation.)

Click here to sign the “political party check-off” pledge. You can give to the WFP when you are doing your taxes. The “political party check-off” is easy to do. On your Oregon Income Tax Form (Form 40) just find your way to Line 70, follow the easy instructions, and you’re all set. (FYI, “507″ is the code for the Working Families Party.) Please take advantage of the moment and direct $3 to your favorite grassroots political party!

Thanks, and hope to see you on the 20th!
